Dr. Fabrice Julien is an Assistant Professor of Health Sciences, and a Medical Sociologist. With an interdisciplinary background based in social medicine, public health, political science and sociology, Julien is a sought-after researcher, scholar and educator. His “T-shaped” training in health disparities enables him to move across domains and to speak to several disciplines. He currently serves on the faculty in the Department of Health Sciences at The University of North Carolina Asheville, and holds a secondary appointment in the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health.
An active educator with domestic and international teaching experience, Dr. Julien is a proud alumnus of The University of Alabama at Birmingham (Ph.D. '20) (M.A. '18), The University of New Hampshire (M.P.H. '15), AmeriCorps (2013-2014), and The University of Georgia (B.A. '13). As a teacher-scholar, Dr. Julien approaches his work in the classroom with the same dedication as his works outside.
Dr. Julien’s research interests include —though are not limited to— the stress process perspective, immigrant health, race and discrimination, adolescent mental health, global health, aging, and social stratification and mobility. He is currently the director of the C.I.H.O. Lab (Contextual Investigations of Health Outcomes) at UNC Asheville. An advocate for/of translational science, he is trained as a quantitative social scientist, and regularly participates in community-based participatory research. He was previously funded by The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) as a predoctoral health services researcher.
An award-winning and emerging scholar, Dr. Julien’s research has been recognized and awarded at regional conferences and departmental annual honors. He regularly presents his research nationally and is an active member in several cross-disciplinary organizations. Most recently, his published work can be read in Research in the Sociology of Health Care (Volume 38). As of January 2023, Julien is an editorial board member for the peer-reviewed journal Society & Mental Health.
Dr. Julien is a native of Port-au-Prince, Haiti, and spent his formative years in the Metro-Atlanta area. He lives in the Asheville metropolitan area, where he holds his most important title as Zoë’s dad.
